Open World Immersive

Worlds people can enter.

Performance and experience design in which the audience becomes part of what happens. For festivals, venues, cultural organisations, brands and private commissioners.

Named formats

Two ways to meet the work in public.

Performance night

Spontaneum

An improvised performance night by Chaosky in which the audience co-author a reality. It begins with an empty stage and a microphone.

From there the world builds through costume creation, set design, music, lighting and improvised performance. Audience members contribute ideas, shape the environment and step into the cast. The theatre is made in front of, and with, the people who came to see it.

Available as a standalone night for venues, festivals and special commissions.

Exhibition

Artcade

The public exhibition of what the practice brings into being.

Photographs, objects, recordings, drawings and written accounts carry the evidence of quests and Moments of Beauty into a shared space, giving brief encounters a continuing life.

Artcade connects exhibition, storytelling, community gathering and the sale or commissioning of creative work.

Commissions

Bespoke immersive experiences.

Live artists, story, spatial design, sound, light, food and audience participation, shaped around a particular audience, setting and purpose.

Festivals
Environments and participatory theatre that give a crowd something to do together.
Venues
Performance nights and multi-room story worlds built around a space and its regulars.
Cultural organisations
Activations and public encounters that bring an audience inside the work.
Brands
Experiences and unusual launches where people take part rather than watch.
Private commissions
Celebrations and gatherings shaped around the people they are for.

City-wide games and quest trails also sit here: local businesses, public spaces and cultural institutions become points in a larger story that people play through on foot. Atlas is also available for hosting, commissioned performance and speaking.

A new build jam

QuestJam

Hack the gap between screen and street.

A 48 hour, multi-location build jam where developers, game designers, artists and makers prototype tools and experiences for real-world adventure: urban quests, spatial storytelling, field devices and wearables.

We are looking for venues to host a site, partners to sponsor a field, and people who want to jam.

QuestJam is a proposal for 2027. Sites, dates and partners are not yet confirmed.

About QuestJam

On the road

The Open World Circuit

The Circuit is a travelling programme of performance, practice and questing, planned around Melbourne, Brisbane, Byron Bay and the Northern Rivers, and Sydney.

A visit can move from an Artcade, to a Spontaneum night, to a public market outpost, to a workshop, and out into the city for a quest. Not every stop needs every part.

The Circuit is a programme in development. Dates and ports will appear on What’s On when they are confirmed.

No Circuit dates confirmed yet.

If you run a venue or festival and would like the Circuit to visit, or you want to know when it reaches your city, tell us.

The public experiment

Viicariius

Open World Theatre presents

A game designer builds a system for noticing possibilities, then offers his own life as the field in which they are tested. Audiences propose quests and help decide what he attempts. The story develops through real encounters and their consequences.

People online contribute direction and imagination. The person in the world contributes presence, judgment and action, and always keeps the right to accept, reinterpret, adapt or refuse.

Viicariius is being built and will have its own home. Until that site opens, questions about the project are welcome here.
