Open World Research

What helps human possibility become actual?

We study how possibilities in human situations are perceived, what allows them to cross into lived reality, and what follows when they do.

Three territories

One question, divided three ways.

  1. Territory 01

    Ecology of Possibility

    What could happen here?

Latent openings in a situation, the cues that signal them, and the perceptual literacy it takes to notice them.

  2. Territory 02

    Ecology of Eclosion

How does something cross into actuality?

Catalysts, thresholds, conditions and inhibitors: what allows a possibility to emerge, and what stops it.

  3. Territory 03

    Ecology of Realities

What kinds of lived realities actually appear?

The recurring experiential and social realities that emerge, and the consequences that follow from them.

The working loop runs possibility, eclosion, reality, consequence, new possibility. It is a research framework, not settled science.

Methods

How we investigate.

Facilitated

Human Interaction Labs

A facilitated environment in which people explore how they meet, influence, respond to and create with one another. Movement, voice, story, sensory awareness and improvisation become ways of understanding a room from within.

Labs are permission-rich, and consent, agency and refusal stay intact throughout.

In the world

Fieldwork and questing

A quest is an intentional journey into the unknown. In the field, a researcher notices an opening, acts or experiments, observes what crosses into actuality, and documents what emerged and what changed.

Failures, non-events and uncertain consequences are recorded alongside the successes.

Practice generates questions. Research sharpens them. Fieldwork tests them. Evidence updates the practice.

Integrity

Keeping kinds of knowing apart.

Poetic language may help us perceive. Research language must help us distinguish what we actually know.

Terms such as eclosion, Almost and MetaScene work as evocative language, models and research constructs. Their usefulness does not prove every implied ontology literally true. Theory has to be able to change because reality disagrees with it.

Every account distinguishes

  1. 01What was directly observed.
  2. 02What participants reported.
  3. 03What a facilitator perceived or experienced.
  4. 04What has been inferred about an interaction.
  5. 05What a theoretical framework proposes.
  6. 06What external empirical research supports.
  7. 07What remains philosophical or speculative.

A live test bed

QuestJam

A proposed 48 hour build jam in which cross-disciplinary teams prototype technology that connects digital systems with physical places, then test it on real streets with real people.

For Research it is a live environment for interdisciplinary experiment. Universities and labs can host a site, mentor teams, or sponsor a field such as field hardware or human interfaces.

QuestJam is a proposal for 2027. Sites, dates and partners are not yet confirmed.

About QuestJam

Collaboration

Ways to work with Research.

Each area below is at a different stage. We say which.

Available by arrangement

Commissioned Labs

Human Interaction Labs designed around a research question, for institutions and research teams who want to study interaction as it unfolds.

Available by arrangement

Participatory simulations

Live simulations in which people explore different roles, norms and cultural conditions, and experience how a social reality forms and what changes when its assumptions change.

Seeking partners

Research partnerships

We are looking for researchers, laboratories and practice-led academic collaborators. The initial academic direction is doctoral research into human eclosion.

Proposition in development

Human Sensing Network

Also described as Humanity as a Service. The idea: help AI developers learn what human experience is like by studying interaction as it unfolds, together with the accounts of the people living it.

Participant agreements would separate attendance, recording, research, publication and AI-training use.

No dataset has been commissioned or licensed, and no university affiliation is claimed. Private participant material is never published on this site.
