Peculiarity Engine

A machine for making Almosts happen.

The Engine is Open World's field tool for questing. It helps you notice a possibility, receive or create a quest, go and act, and record what happened.

The question

What is already possible here?

What possibilities are already present here that habit is preventing us from noticing or acting on?

A quest is an intentional journey into the unknown. It turns attention into action. A conversation, a place, an object, a recurring image or an unfinished intention can be where one starts.

The interface is designed to return you to reality as quickly as possible. People live the moments. Technology helps us see the patterns between them.

Five fields a quester learns to read

Physical
Material conditions, objects and environment.
Social
The meanings a culture assigns to people, places, behaviours and objects.
Personal
Your own narrative, and your relationship to who, where and what you are.
Natural
The living environment beyond and through the human-made world.
Mythic
The stories through which people and cultures orient themselves.

Where it fits

The Engine, Open World and Viicariius.

Practice

Inside Open World

Questing runs through Flight Club and the Academy. Training in the room becomes a quest in the world, then reflection, then a return to practice.

Public experiment

Alongside Viicariius

Viicariius is the public game in which people online help guide someone acting in the world. The Engine is the instrument that game is developed and tested with.

Records

For Research

Quests leave field records. The Peculiarity Index is the instrument for asking how significant an act was, with Grace as its gate.

For places and businesses

Quest points and city-wide games.

A café, bookshop, gallery or venue can become a quest point: somewhere players visit as part of an unfolding story, through a touch point, a password exchanged with staff, or something to find.

The same design can run across a neighbourhood, a festival, a cultural district or a city. This is an offer in development.
