Grace as a gate

In the Peculiarity Index, no amount of rarity or ingenuity can make up for an act that diminishes someone.

Context

The Peculiarity Index is an instrument for asking how significant an act in the world was. It looks at the act, the moment and the field it leaves behind.

The six components

  • Rarity: would this have happened anyway?
  • Ingenuity: is there invention in the means?
  • Timeliness: does this particular moment call for the act?
  • Resonance: does the place participate in its meaning?
  • Weave: what connections, witnesses or continuing threads were created?
  • Grace: did it leave the world more beautiful and people more able to participate?

Why Grace works differently

Grace is not one score among six to be averaged. It acts as a gate. Extraction, humiliation, coercion or diminishing another person cannot be compensated for by rarity, ingenuity or spectacle.

The Index also keeps two questions apart: what happened in the world, and what happened to the person who acted. A deed does not score highly because it felt frightening or profound to perform.

Evidence and limitations

  • The Index is an imperfect instrument that is still being calibrated through lived quests. A score is not a substitute for a research account.
